The Party's Philosophy

"From Winson's flat it was just possible to see the three slogans of the Party written in enormous letters on the side of the building:

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH"

The Party's slogan presents opposite concepts as the same, to justify their actions. By this way people were bound to believe that the only way they can reach peace is by the war, or the only way of freedom is slavery, or the less you know, the stronger you are. Using these slogans, the Party was able to do what they want, to manipulate informations, to enslave peolpe or to have soldiers in the street, public spaces and bars, arguing that peace will come if war is present.

  1. Excellent analysis! Orwell was very clever to portray all the strategies used in several dictatorships in this novel. Fear is one of the Party's main weapons. By making everyone afraid and ignorant, they can manage humans as if they were cattle.

The blog is gorgeous. Great work, boys!

  2. Pretty interesting, its related to the two sides of the same coin, one causes the other to exists, and vice-versa.
The need of meta-level becomes evident in order to stop opposites from reinforcing each other.

In our opinion, these slogans wouldn't work at present because society has learned from history (the Holocaust). In those days, this phylosophy was unprecedented. That's why people could be brainwashed.

This is a very interesting topic.

    Greetings!

  5. In my opinion the analysis is good because the phrases are very contradictory. I think the book is also written to show how will society and government if we still in this way , is like an alarm.

  6. Nice!!!!
    I think that the slogan:
    "WAR IS PEACE
    FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
    IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH"
Has a lot to do with the actual society.
    This is an interesting topic!!!
For example, now at days..TV has a lot of influece in our lives!!!... "Gran Cuñado"..."Operacion Triunfo".."Intrusos".. all bullshit!!
    And "FASHION"... wtf???
COME ON!! DON'T LET OTHER PEOPLE CONTROL YOUR MIND!!! BE OPENMINDED!!
The "important" people, the TV, the government, the army control the rest of society!
Successful people are the ones that think by themselves...no by other people!!!

Is difficult to express, and sorry my english..but that's what I think.
    Good Blog..

  9. The way the Party presents opposites ideas, it's like giving a double message, so as to get people confused, and therefore convince them to think what the Party wanted. This is up to now how some governments try to get more power (..manipulating information). So we must try always to make our own analysis of the information we recieve.

    Good blog!

  10. Interesting analysis! Don’t you think that now a days we are also controled? I also think as Technical English, this kind of government and methodologies wouldn’t succeed because we are enough intelligent for not to accept it; and also we know how people suffer in the past because of this kind of matters.
In addition, this slogan is related with our society. On TV, at the newspaper, magazine, people talk about others people life’s, about their behaviors, duct, etc. So, what we are turn into??
We must think in what we wanted to be, and no in what other people want for us. We must be ourselves; we must me open-minded, an sincere with us. This will make us a person, and not a part of cattle. Don’t you think?

  11. I think that the analysis of the slogan it`s very good.I also think that with this, they want to show who people, and society will be in the future. I think that it is like a warning for us.
    Good job !
